Edna Bowen was an old woman who lived in rural Lawrence County, Ohio, down on the Ohio River. She knew how to use the bark of certain trees to make cough syrup and how to bind up a sprain with mullein leaves. If you sat down to her table she put out pickles, chow chow, biscuits with honey butter, fried chicken, green beans, and apple pie with a wedge of cheese; everything came from her garden, her hives, her animals, her trees. In the spring, when the weather was still raw, she’d gather up baby chicks and tuck them inside her blouse to keep them warm. When they poked their heads out and chirped, Edna would chirp back to soothe them saying, "Pretty sing, pretty sing. Pretty little pretty sing."
